Formation & History of IHSI and NCIHS

Equine culture of India is as old as Mahabharat and Ramayan , where “ Ashwa” (Horse) has been an integral part of Indian culture from marriage to religious ceremony to war , the realization that documentation of the breed, its conformation, lineage were missing , even after independence was devastating. The thought of documenting , promoting, preserving and educating horse owners created Indigenous Horse Society of India.

Indigenous Horse Society of India ( IHSI) has been working for the promotion, preservation and recognition of indigenous horses since 1999. IHSI has been registered since 2001. In absence of any official and authentic documentation of indigenous horses , Society searched and collected various international documents which were in practice for registration of breeds and to maintain lineage of horses and created registration form and started the work of registration of indigenous horses.

With increased interest in the indigenous horses, specially Marwari, Kathiwari and Sindhi various Societies in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab , South of India started working for the betterment of indigenous horses. These Societies organise horse shows , equestrian sports to showcase the positive strength of the indigenous horses.

In 2016 , it was felt that over the years due to the efforts of these various societies of indigenous horses , specially Marwari, Kathiawari and Sindhi breeds gained immense popularity and the breeding also improved but there was no scientific lineage system to maintain the pedigree record . Thus the idea of NCIHS came into existence wherein different societies working for the cause of Indigenous horses, got together and decided to find out the best way to have DNA parentage and secure its record.

National Confederation of Indigenous Horse Societies ( NCIHS ) is a forum representing different societies working for the indigenous breed of horses ive. Marwari, Kathiawari , Maipuri, Spiti, Zanskari and Sindhi,

On 9" May 2016 a delegation of IHSI and NCIHS met the authorities of RWITC at Mahalaxmi Race Course , Mumbai and signed an MOU for the services for DNA parentage of Indigenous Horses with the Stud Book Authority of India.
